Fancy a quick getaway to the UK? Having just moved to Burlington from the UK at the beginning of the year, I was looking for a great cafe where I could get an afternoon tea with biscuits.
As much as I like Williams, Coffee Culture and Starbucks, they were not offering the authentic British experience I was craving, which I had become accustomed to in Old Blighty.
I stumbled upon Serendipity Tea House in a Google search and I must say, it is as close to a British High Tea experience as you could get.
Owned by cousins, Ruby and Nancy, this quaint tea house on John Street in downtown Burlington, is decorated in such a typical British fashion that it feels as though you’ve walked into a cozy English cafe. Although born in Canada, the owners’ parents are from the UK, so there is a great influence that ties them to all things British.
“The girls were looking to open a great shop that reflected what they loved about England. They are very happy with Serendipity and are proud of the authentic British feel” said Nancy’s mom, who helps out at Serendipity.
Since opening it’s doors in September 2012, Serendipity Tea House has been rather busy and is looking to expand, to include an additional area for private parties. Serendipity has been very popular with Bridal showers, Baby showers, Engagement parties, Birthday parties, larger group get togethers and British people in town. They are looking at getting a liquor licence to include champagne and wine on to their menu, to help people celebrate these special occasions.
In keeping with their British influence, Serendipity’s food menu includes freshly baked scones with clotted cream and seasonal preserves, delectable cucumber and salmon classic teatime sandwiches and they offer a range of specialty teas that are sure to suit all tastes.
Serendipity, meaning “happy accident” or “pleasant surprise”, is sure to exceed expectations and live up to it’s name. You don’t have to drive all the way to Toronto or Niagara for a proper High Tea anymore, you can get a little taste of England in your own backyard.
