City of Burlington Wants your Help in Naming Park

February 13th, 2012 by Comment button 1 Comment »

The City of Burlington is asking for help from residents to name the city’s largest park.

In 2002, the city, with the Bruce Trail Association as partner, acquired a 165 acre piece of land in the northwest area of the city, located near Dundas Street and Kerns Road. By the fall of 2011, the first phase of the park, which included two soccer fields, playgrounds, trails and re-naturalization of the park was complete. The target opening for this new park is June 2012.

“The city showed vision in buying this property when it did, demonstrating a commitment to green space and valuable resources in this city,” said Mayor Rick Goldring. “Located on the Niagara Escarpment – a UNESCO world biosphere reserve –  this park is a magnificent anchor for Burlington.”

During the development process, the park became known as New City Park. This name was used to identify the park but was never meant to be the permanent name. The City wants public input into the naming of this brand new park for residents to enjoy.

After consultation with many community groups, including Conservation Halton, the Niagara Escarpment Commission, the Bruce Trail Association, the Burlington Historical Society and some park-user groups, the City asked for their input on potential names. This resulted in a list of 25 names that have now been reduced to three final choices: Escarpment Park, City View Park, and Escarpment Heights Park.

“The City of Burlington wants your input into the naming of the city’s largest park, and is working with its community partners to do so,” said Scott Stewart, General Manager of Community Services. “Naming the park is an exciting opportunity for everyone in the community to get involved before grand opening day in June 2012. We look forward to bringing your feedback to Council for approval.”
